Join us on the WLG MasterChat on Thursday, February 1 at 1:00 pm to hear the City Manager journey of Karen Pinkos, City Manager of El Cerrito. Karen is in her fifth year as a City Manager, having previously served as the Assistant City Manager and felt totally prepared to take over the job. Once she was appointed as the City Manager, however, she found herself facing a financial crisis, a state audit, and a need for a major organizational culture change—all during the pandemic, and all during her term as ICMA President. Surviving these challenges took hard work, tears, and a lot of self-reflection; the payoff is that El Cerrito now faces a bright future. Join Karen as she pulls back the curtain on the lessons she learned, how she feels vulnerability is strength, and how she relied on her team, friends, and colleagues in the profession to help her through.

WLG’s MasterChats are a safe, comfortable space where CAWLG members can learn new skills, share experiences, or get advice while connecting with other female local government leaders. The calls are held on the first and third Thursdays of every month at 1:00 p.m. and are short, lasting only 30 minutes. These small group calls cover a variety of topics including leadership lessons, project management, problem solving, self-care, balance, and other topics specific to women. These are informal, comfortable sessions providing an opportunity for all attendees to speak (or just listen!) and ask questions of other women in local government.
